KOREAN Glass Skin
The full glass-skin method — layered slowly, applied gently, and repeated until the skin looks like it's lit from within.
Korean glass skin is less about a single miracle product and more about a specific order of very hydrating layers. The goal is a poreless, dewy, reflective finish — skin that looks like glass. The method leans on gentle cleansing, humectants like hyaluronic acid, and thin layers repeated one after another so nothing feels heavy.
The layering order
- Oil cleanse — melt off sunscreen and makeup with an oil-based balm.
- Water cleanse — a low-pH gel or cream cleanser to lift what the oil didn't.
- Gentle exfoliation — 2–3× a week, a mild BHA or lactic acid toner.
- Toner — a hydrating (not stripping) toner to prep damp skin.
- Essence — the signature K-beauty step: a watery layer that boosts every step after it.
- Serum / ampoule — hyaluronic acid or niacinamide for hydration and clarity.
- Sheet mask (optional) — 2–3× a week for an instant plump.
- Eye cream — patted around the orbital bone.
- Moisturizer — a gel or cream to seal in every layer above.
- Sunscreen — every morning, non-negotiable. This is what protects the glass finish.
Double cleansing done right
The double cleanse is the foundation. Oil dissolves oil — SPF, sebum, makeup — without stripping the skin. Follow with a low-pH water-based cleanser to lift anything left. Skip harsh foaming cleansers; they undo the barrier work the rest of the routine is doing.
Why essences matter
Essences are the step most Western routines skip. They're lightweight, watery, and their whole job is hydration and prep — helping the serum and moisturizer that come next sink in more evenly. Apply with clean hands, pressed into damp skin, not rubbed.
The "7 skin method"
A viral shortcut for extra dewy days: after cleansing, apply a hydrating toner seven times, pressing each layer in before adding the next. The skin ends up drenched — perfect canvas for the rest of the routine, or for a no-makeup makeup day.
Habits that make or break it
- + Sleep on a silk pillowcase — less friction on damp, hydrated skin.
- + Drink water like it's your job.
- + Don't rub — press, pat, glide.
- + Introduce actives slowly; retinoids and glass-skin layering can co-exist, just not on the same night when you're starting out.
- + Sunscreen every morning. Every morning.
Glass skin isn't a product — it's a rhythm. Give it four to six weeks of consistency before deciding whether it's working. It always is.
